Mission and Vision

Inspired by bold and adventurous stories, we are passionate about bringing aviation history to life. We work in service to our communities. We are adaptable and agile, embracing quality, professionalism, and courage in our work.

Our common purpose is to make The Hangar Flight Museum a premiere destination to explore, engage, and experience the transformational power of flight. We are united as storytellers, stewarding and sharing the aviation history of Calgary and western Canada and its impact on our community.

We explore how our world has been changed by flight and ensure that our visitors, staff, and volunteers are safe and comfortable in our space.

We approach our work with meaning and purpose and take care of the land and sky.

We are sustainable and intentional in making decisions that contribute to a thriving organization, and we share and explore diverse stories and experiences to contribute to an inclusive space.

We are recruiting.

Volunteering has given me the chance to “share my knowledge” after serving my time in the RCAF. Being a people person it is great to talk to folks from all over the world and knowing we have a common interest in aircraft is just a little icing on the cake.

CURRENT OPPORTUNITIES

EDUCATION TOUR GUIDE

We are looking for volunteers with weekday availability between 9:30 – 2 to help us run our Theory of Flight Program. Guides have a group of 6-10 Grade 5 students who get to learn about flight and how it works, then go on a tour of the Hangar – look at aircraft and apply the theory of flight to the actual aircrafts. These programs are typically 2 hours in length and often run twice a day. Volunteers interested would have shadow shifts where they watch current volunteers teach the program, before they start slowly building up their teaching time by splitting with another volunteer until they feel comfortable doing it solo.

FLIGHT SIMULATOR FACILITATOR

We are looking for people interested in joining our SIM team. We have an OpenSource SIM retrofit in a 1950s CAE trainer that people can book tickets for on a designated SIM day, once every month. If you are interested, we have two roles: Greeters and Instructors. Starting as a Greeter, you will greet people as they arrive at the SIM, tell them a little about the SIM and how it works and get them ready for their flight. From there, the Instructor guides them through a 30-minute flight in the Simulator where they get to take-off, land and fly a circuit. Interested volunteers will start as Greeters before working their way up to Instructing. To begin training, you can either shadow a SIM day or you can come by on a Friday between 10-4 to get an overview from an experienced volunteer.

WEEKEND MUSEUM HOSTS

We are looking for people to join us at weekend shifts and provide informal guidance to families and tourists as they come into the museum. The shifts are 3 hours in length and could involve talking to small groups and leading them around, answering questions people have regarding the planes, or the museum in general. Interested individuals can start the process by reading our information manual on the planes in the building as well as gaining familiarity with the panels, exhibits, and information around the museum. During the summer, we have host positions during weekdays as well.

AIRCRAFT/BUILDING MAINTENANCE

We are looking for volunteers with anytime availability (10-4) to come and clean both the aircraft, and the building surrounding it. We get a lot of dust and debris, so volunteers will be given directions for wiping down the aircraft as well as sweeping up the floors under the aircraft. We are looking for 1–2-hour shifts at any time to come in, report to a staff member, and help keep the space clean. Your first shift would involve going over the planes and proper items for cleaning the artifacts.

When I retired I knew I wanted to find a volunteer position where I could help people because that would provide me with a meaningful and satisfying activity, but I didn’t know where. It has been a very rewarding volunteering experience at The Hangar and I would highly recommend it for others.

It is a privilege to be able to participate in the efforts to preserve and display these magnificent aircraft, to pass on their significance, and the knowledge of my own experiences, to both students and visitors alike, and to do so alongside the other volunteers and staff.
