Hi, I’m Sylvan Zheng, a 14-year-old grade 9 student at Louis Riel School. I actively pursue learning and experimentation in STEM, especially regarding most things >50m off the earth’s surface, including ornithology, aviation, aerodynamics, astronomy, cosmology, astrophysics, aerospace, and space exploration (sorry, no meteorology). These interests, along with my innate passion for space, have driven me to explore and partake in a multitude of opportunities, including science fair, FTC robotics, Air Cadets, and volunteering at the Avro Museum, and inspired me to found a Space Club at my school.

To date, science fair has been my main outlet for my passion for experimentation. Over the past 4 years, I’ve worked on projects ranging from atmospheric ion propulsion to biomimicry in aviation, with the end goal of ultimately developing valuable aerospace engineering skills. Beyond the hard skills, I also had the privilege of attending Canada-Wide Science Fair, where I forged connections with some of the brightest youth in the world, and had the opportunity to meet astronaut Jeremy Hansen! Currently, I’m working on a project to improve the effectiveness and accessibility of search and rescue UAVs, and plan to continue participating for as long as I can.

At school, I’ve started a Space Club to share my passion for space exploration with my peers. Every other week, we meet to discuss a range of topics, including astrophysics and current space events. For example, last week we discussed high impulse propulsion systems, and how such systems could be used to theoretically deorbit the moon, and next week we’re holding an election for vice president and a member-led presentation about Jupiter. Over the course of the year, the club has grown from a few friends to a consistent attendance of over 10 members. Overall, I consider this endeavour a success and plan to continue into my future high school years.

When I first heard about United Space School from my Air Cadet squadron’s announcements, just two days before the deadline, I knew I had to send in a submission. For a month, I eagerly awaited the email. Just after getting home one day, I received the life-changing news that I had been selected as the Western Canada Delegate! I have to thank The Hangar Flight Museum for providing such a valuable once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. While I’ve worked on many projects in which I developed skills necessary for space exploration in science fair and FTC robotics, I’ve never had the chance to work on a project specifically involving space with a team. Participation in the United Space School will provide me with an unmatched opportunity to connect with experts and peers, expand my experience in space, and ultimately solidify my career. I’m eager to start the pre-assignments, and can’t wait to start this stellar program in Houston!
