Learn about flight and aerodynamics at a 'Museum with Altitude!' A field trip at The Hangar Flight Museum brings the science of flight to life and makes it more engaging to learn about pitch and yaw and the four forces of flight. Take a look at our program options below - we're sure you'll find something that will inspire dreams of flight! 

For grade 5 or 6, we recommend bringing two classes per day, and booking a combination of: 

Program 1, Tour Based: Theory of Flight or Now Boarding

Program 2, Hands-on Based: Rocket Propulsion Lab or Glider Test Pilot

School field trips are only open to groups of students and their chaperones who are participating in an organized field trip through an institution accredited by Alberta Education (or an equivalent from another jurisdiction). 

We also host a few Homeschool Days yearly, that parents can sign up for to have their homeschooled children attend a field trip with us! The next dates are: October 7 & 8. Please see our Upcoming Events page for more information.

THEORY OF FLIGHT

Through discussion and touring through the museum with a knowledgeable guide, students learn how an aircraft flies. They study forces of flight, Bernoulli’s Principle, Newton’s Laws of Motion, and the control surfaces of aircraft. This tour is a great way for students to experience real-life application of abstract concepts and they are able to discover the secrets of flight using real aircraft.

ROCKET PROPULSION LAB

NEW! We all know the saying "it's not rocket science" - but in this case it is! Students will build, test, and evaluate stomp rockets to understand density, volume, compressibility, and the four forces of flight through posing testable questions and conducting investigations that demonstrate these forces. 

  • Grade level: 5
  • Curriculum connections: Energy - students will gain understanding of the 4 forces of flight, their opposing forces, and their impact on flight through vertical movement.

GLIDER TEST PILOT

NEW! Step into the role of Glider Test Pilot at The Hangar! Students discover the principles of flight and four forces that act on the movement of living things and constructed objects in the air by building and testing gliders. Scientific discovery and manipulation of variables will take place to get hands-on experience with the science of flight.

  • Grade level: 5
  • Curriculum connections: Energy – students will gain understanding of the 4 forces of flight, their opposing forces, and their impact on flight. Scientific Methods – students will practice using manipulated, responding, and controlled variables within a controlled experiment.

NOW BOARDING

The number one wish we hear from teachers and students is that they would like to sit inside one of our historical aircraft. We listened, and now's your chance to give your students a memorable experience! In addition to our Theory of Flight program, students get the opportunity to enter up to 3 aircraft and sit right in the captain's seat!

JUNIOR AVIATORS

Led by one of our knowledgeable volunteers, students tour the museum and see real airplanes up close. Students then move into our classroom and build two flying crafts to take home with them.

  • Grade level: Preschool/Kindergarten

Led by one of our knowledgeable volunteers, students tour through the history of our Second World War hangar and the military, commercial and civilian planes contained within it.

We have developed Rocket Propulsion Lab and Glider Test Pilot in response to the new curriculum, but are also looking at future programming options for math, science, and social studies at other grade levels to address the new gaps or difficult to teach elements of the curriculum.
